Arca de Dados

About the project

The Arca de Dados project aims to preserve, harmonize and integrate Brazil’s environmental, land and climate data.

To achieve this purpose, the project is structured around four main workstreams:

01

Safeguarding and versioning

(i) safeguard this data against political and institutional disruptions and ensure its versioning;

02

Data harmonization

(ii) make datasets mutually intelligible, enabling new combinations and use cases;

03

Availability and transparency

(iii) provide the data through platforms, ensuring its availability, accessibility and transparency;

04

Digital Public Good

and, finally, (iv) develop the technology architecture as a Digital Public Good (DPG), with free and open-source, non-proprietary and extensively documented code, enabling the solution to be replicated in similar initiatives around the world.

Institutional framework

Arca de Dados is hosted at the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (FBDS) and was formalized as a complementary subproduct of the project to modernize the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), developed as a Digital Public Good (CAR-DPG) in partnership with Brazil’s Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI).

Funding

The initiative is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), an agency affiliated with Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and responsible for funding sustainable development projects worldwide.
